Idris Elba Joins Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim,’ not Django

Idris Elba, the burgeoning actor who played Russell “Stringer” Bell on The Wire, has joined Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim.

The Sci-fi film is about a group of humans defending the planet against an alien source through the use of robotic mechas. Shooting begins in Toronto this fall.

Elba was one of the few names rumored to be in the running for Quentin Tarantino‘s new film Django Unchained, however, it’s being reported that he is no longer in the running and this casting solidifies those reports.

Elba’s other credits include ‘Thor,’ ‘Obsessed’ and British television show ‘Luther.’
