Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson has joined the indie drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, in which she’ll play a drug-addicted New York City mother whose arrest forces her son and his best friend to fend for themselves. “She’ll be a very surprising character,” says Hudson. “Its’a small role, but it has ranges and layers to it.”

The film, directed by George Tillman Jr. (Faster) and co-produced by Hudson’s Scecret Life of Bees costar Alicia Keys, will begin production later this year.

Before she shoots this project in August , Hudson will head to Atlanta to play Sister Rosemary in the Farrelly brothers‘ update of The Three Stooges, alongside fellow nuns Jane Lynch and Larry David. “She’s nice,” Hudson says of Sister Rosemary. “If there was ever a sassy nun, that would be me.”
