Will Smith Offers Denzel Washington Lead Role in ‘The American Can’

Will Smith has been trying to get a film made about the Hurricane Katrina disaster for almost two years. Rumors swirled that Smith would star in The American Can film, but It’s now being reported by Vulture that he will strictly produce the flick and not actually star in it. It’s also being reported that Smith will offer the lead role to Oscar winner Denzel Washington.

The film tells the real-life story of residents living in the American Can apartment complex during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Trapped inside the apartments were elderly and disabled residents (whom were mostly white) kept safe and cared for by a black ex-Marine named John Keller.

Both actors are working on several big upcoming projects that may interfere with this project. Smith’s role in the upcoming M. Night Shyamlan’s One Thousand A.E. turned out to be the project that thrawted Smith’s acting involvement in American Can. Production for One Thousand A.E. begins in January 2012. Meanwhile, Washington is currently filming the highly-anticipated spy thrillerSafe House.
