Did you know there’s a British Law & Order? We sure didn’t! How about the fact that they’re gearing up for their third season? Nope?! We were pleasantly surprised to find out that one of the lead roles is a character named Alesha Phillips, a junior crown prosecutor played by British actress Freema Agyeman.

Based on the wildly successful American show of the same name, Law & Order: UK follows a group of detectives and prosecutors as they work together to solve crimes and bring perpetrators to justice in London. Ronnie Brooks (Bradley Walsh) is a cop from the East End. His partner, the charming Matt Devlin (Jamie Bamber), has an approach to policing that’s part seduction and part force.

Both report to Natalie Chandler (Harriet Walter), a working mom who always has their backs. On the other side of the court are crown prosecutors James Steel (Ben Daniels) and Alesha Phillips (Freema Agyeman) and their superior, George Castle (Ben Daniels). The two teams encounter never-ending action in their quest to keep London safe.

Freema Agyeman plays crown prosecutor Alesha Phillips, partner to James Steel. She is the “ying to James’ yang,” Agyeman says, and brings empathy to their professional partnership. Intelligent and confident, Phillips has worked hard and overcome many roadblocks to get to her present position, and she remains on the side of the underdog. Agyeman is well-known for her role as Martha on Doctor Who.

Law & Order: UK Season 3 premieres in the U.S. Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 9 p.m.EST on BBC America.
