A new film starring Phylicia Rashad, Rosie Perez, and True Blood‘s Nelsan Ellis was announced today. The film is based on a novel by British writer Marie Phillips.

Gods Behaving Badly is a comedy set in modern day New York about downtrodden Gods and Goddesses. The film begins principal photography this month in New York City, and features an all-star cast which also includes Christopher Walken and Sharon Stone.

Rashad, Perez, and Nelsan will all portray Gods and Goddesses. Cool, right? The British satire envisions once-powerful Gods and Goddess falling from grace, and their struggle to to integrate into normal society. Each of the characters will have dead-end, outlandish day jobs for comedic flair as they attempt to adapt to normal life in the 21st century.

Originally set in a London house, the story has been reworked for the film’s screenplay. Now set in a New York brownstone, the Gods will use their powers in funny ways.

The official synopsis and casting announcement:

The film tells the story of the Greek Gods, alive and well and living in a brownstone in New York City, as they cross paths with a young couple, Kate and Neil. The intersection of the Gods and the mortals threatens not only the couple’s budding relationship, but the future of everything else. Kate will be played by Alicia Silverstone and Neil by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The gods are: Aphrodite — Sharon Stone, Apollo — Oliver Platt, Artemis — Edie Falco, Demeter — Phylicia Rashad, Dionysus — Nelsan Ellis, Eros — Gideon Glick, Hades — John Turturro, Hermes — Henry Zebrowski, Persephone — Rosie Perez, Zeus – Christopher Walken.
