Idris Elba Shoots Down ‘Bond’ Rumors [Audio]

In an interview with NPR, British actor Idris Elba addressed rumors suggesting he would star as James Bond in an upcoming Bond film. Elba denied he was offered such role, but stated he would consider it if the movie studio offered it to him.

“It’s a rumor,” he said. “It’s a very old rumor. My dad and I were talking about this the other day. I would do it, but I don’t want to be called the first black James Bond. Do you understand what I ‘m saying? Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond. So if I played him, I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.”

Rumors of Elba playing Bond re-emerged after fellow Brit actor Naomie Harris was rumored to be the next bond girl. However, Harris’ role was revealed to be that of MI6 agent Moneypenney earlier this year.

The actor also discussed his work on ‘Luther,’ a British cop drama–which premiered on BBC America this week to mixed reviews. Coincidentally, Elba’s work on the show earned him an Emmy nod this year.
