‘Sparkle’: Jordin’s Casting Notice

When searching for the new lead in the forthcoming ‘Sparkle’ remake, casting director Twinkie Byrd described the Sparkle Anderson character in great detail. Ultimately, the part ended up in the hands of singer Jordin Sparks.

19, African-American, beautiful and talented, but humbler and more modest than her provocative older sister Tammy (who goes by “Sister”), Sparkle is a deeply skilled singer/songwriter who works at her strict mother’s dress shop and isn’t allowed to pursue her passion of making music. Unaccustomed to the spotlight, but secretly longing to claim it for herself, Sparkle secretly convinces Sister and Dolores (her half-sister) to form a musical group with her. Sparkle’s new boyfriend and manager, Stix, urges Sparkle to go after her dreams and get out of Sister’s shadow, while at the same time promoting Sister as the group’s leader singer/main attraction. But Sparkle’s real hurdle is breaking free of her mother, Effie, who was once a singer herself but believes no good can come of that lifestyle…LEAD (1) Actress must be able to sing. Piano is optional but a plus.

What does this tell us? Jordin will be playing the piano (or pretending to). Tika will be playing Jordin and Carmen’s “half” sister. Jordin and Whitney will not get along. The casting director/filmmakers took hundreds of self-taped auditions into consideration before choosing Sparks.
