Anthony Mackie to Play Sugar Ray Leonard? (Video)
While being interviewed on the red carpet for his new film, Real Steel, Anthony Mackie confirmed reports that he is interested in portraying boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard on the big screen in the near future.
Leonard is the latest historical figure out of a string of people Mackie has pitched himself to play. Most recently, the actor announced that he was developing a biopic about the life of US Olympian Jesse Owens.
Mackie is building an impressive resume of playing characters of historical interest. He recently finished filming a biopic about the life of jazz musician Charles “Buddy” Bolden, in which he plays the leading role. Most recently, he portrayed William Johnson, the best friend of President Abraham Lincoln in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. And of course, he may be best known for his portrayal of the late rapper Tupac Shakur in Notorious.
Real Steel opens in theaters on Oct 7. Mackie can also be seen in the new comedy What’s Your Number, which is currently playing in theaters everywhere.
