Thandie Newton 'Death and the Maiden' Official PosterMovie star Thandie Newton is currently starring in Ariel Dorfman‘s psychological stage play “Death and the Maiden” at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London’s West End (London’s Broadway, for American readers).

Newton plays Paulina Salas, a former political prisoner trying to come to terms with her traumatizing past.

When a stranger arrives at the isolated beach house she shares with her husband, Paulina is convinced he was the man who tormented and raped her many years before.

Theatre critics have been highly critical of Newton’s performance, but there are some that give her rather glowing reviews.

“Jeremy Herrin’s production nevertheless generates considerable tension and marks the West End debut of film star Thandie Newton as Paulina. Even if her voice could do with more modulations of tone, she performs with great assurance, shifting from vengeful fury to sudden vulnerability with total plausibility,” writes Michael Billington of The Guardian.

Even though the reviews are not quite stellar, we applaud Newton for having the courage to perform such grueling and emotionally draining material in front of a live audience almost every single night–for fourteen weeks. That is no easy feat.

“Death and the Maiden” is currently playing at Harold Pinter Theatre in London SW1. Get tickets here.
