First Look: Holly Robinson Peete in ‘Mike & Molly’

Holly Robinson Peete in 'Mike & Molly'

Holly Robinson Peete is sounding off about her abrupt departure from CBS’ ‘The Talk’ and her surprising new gig on CBS’ “Mike & Molly.” The actress appeared on the show for the first time tonight.

“If you told me last year that I wasn’t going to be on The Talk and I was going to be on Mike & Molly, I would have said, ‘What the hell you talking about?’ So, you just never know in this business,” Peete, 47, tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Peete plays the love interest of Carl (Reno Wilson), the ladies man who’s finally thinking about settling down.

“She’s a single mom,” Peete says of her character. “She’s kind of no-nonsense and she knows exactly what she wants and she’s not trying to date a player. The dynamic between her and Carl’s grandmother [played by Cleo King] should be interesting, because she wanted Carl to go out and do his thing. But when it actually happens, there may be some remorse there.”

The series, run by the infamous Chuck Lorre (the same person behind Charlie Sheen’s ‘Two and half men’), recruited Peete for the job. The actress sings his praises.

When everything went down, I was just as surprised as everyone else, but I was so happy,” she says. “Chuck has been such a supporter. And I can’t remember the last time I was on such a humble set. I mean these guys are a stone-cold TV runaway hit. That Melissa McCarthy is a megastar. They could be such jerks if the wanted to and they’re not.”
“It came at a time when – I’m not going to lie – when I was a little bit down,” she also says. “It really lifted me up. It’s just a recurring part, it’s not a serious regular or anything, but I’m just thrilled. It’s great and it’s been a blessing.”

The actress also addressed her departure from ‘The Talk,’ and explained how the cast changes took away from the show’s original “mommy bloggers” concept.

“Usually when you get fired, your boss brings you in, sits you down and tells you why they can’t keep you,” Peete told The Hollywood Reporter. “They say we have to downsize or you’re not doing this, you’re not doing that. I was never given that opportunity.”

“I feel bad for [Sara], because I think about her original concept for the show. I don’t know where that is now,” she says. “I mean the two ladies they brought on are fantastic and great TV personalities, but they’re not moms. So, I guess they abandoned the whole mom brand. That was Sara’s initial concept. I haven’t really spoken to her much since, so I don’t know what she thinks about that concept being dismantled.”

Mike & Molly airs Mondays at 9:30 p.m. on CBS.
