Is Eddie Murphy’s Oscars Hosting Gig In Jeopardy?

Eddie Murphy may be in the middle of a sticky situation between his ‘Tower Heist’ co-producing partner Brett Ratner and The Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences. Ratner landed in hot water after the Oscar Award producer went on a bizarre homophobic rant, which inevitably led to his voluntary dismissal from the program.

Since Ratner is the one who brought Murphy onboard to host the 84th Oscars, it would make sense that Murphy might not want to do the show without him. And since Murphy is known to be very selective with who he works with, it’s quite possible that Murphy will exit if the Academy doesn’t find an acceptable replacement producer that suits him.

During publicity rounds for Tower Heist, the actor expressed his excitement about working on the Oscars together with Ratner. The duo recently announced they are already working on a new movie project together. However, Murphy’s loyalty to his partner may not override such a huge comeback opportunity the Oscars will provide.

The Academy issued the following statement about the Ratner controversy:

Beverly Hills, CA (November 8, 2011) – This morning, Brett Ratner submitted his resignation as a producer of the 84th annual Academy Awards to Academy President Tom Sherak. Ratner then issued an open letter to the entertainment industry in which he explained his decision.

“He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself,” Sherak said. “Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent.”

Do you think Eddie will stay on as host of the 84th Oscars–or is it a wrap?
