Eddie Murphy will executive produce and star in a HBO film about controversial former Washington DC Mayor Marion Barry. The project will be directed by Spike Lee, and the script will be written by John Ridley.

Barry was caught smoking crack cocaine back in 1990. After serving time in prison, he returned to the city council  and continued to pursue a very long career in politics. In 2009 he was arrested for stalking a former employee. He is still a member of the city council.

Murphy has been doing quite a lot behind the scenes lately. The actor recently revealed he was developing a Beverly Hills Cop television series. Murphy can be seen next alongside John Witherspoon and Kerry Washington in his new film, “A Thousand Words,” which hits theaters March 23, 2012.
