Indian-American director M. Night Shymalan has confirmed production on his new film, 1000 A.E. (After Earth) will begin next week (Feb. 6) in Costa Rica. The film, which stars Will Smith and son Jaden Smith, is “set 1,000 years into the future, a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.” The father and son duo were last seen on screen together in 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness.

Jaden, who recently cut his trademark long hair for the role, is said to play the young hero of the film. It was also rumored that British actress Sophie Okonedo and Zoe Kravitz were in talks for two pivotal roles in the sci-fi flick. However, those rumors have yet to be confirmed as true.

Will can be seen next in the third installment of the Men In Black franchise (opening May 25), opposite Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. “After Earth” is scheduled to be released in theaters on Jun. 7, 2013.
