Blair Underwood talked with Anderson Cooper to discuss his ancestry for a new television project in a video clip from the Anderson show (airing Feb. 24). The actor is promoting his episode of NBC’s “Who Do You Think You Are?” series. That show follows celebrities on their journey to find their ancestors. While researching, Blair was able to trace his family as far back as the 1790s. Underwood was joined by actress and show producer Lisa Kudrow.

Underwood also stopped by the “Today” show and discussed his experience on the show. The actor also took the opportunity to plug his new Broadway play, A Streetcar Named Desire.

Tracing one’s history back is already a difficult task for anybody, but it can be even tougher for black Americans. As a result of the slave trade, record keeping from the time period could be scarce, destroyed, and nonexistent. A DNA testing project has finally opened new doors for African-Americans searching for their history, reports Hollywood Reporter. Underwood is able to track his family’s history back to Cameroon in west central Africa where his relatives still live. Watch the video below:

Who Do You Think You Are? airs Fridays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
