Aretha Franklin has expressed interest in a new leading lady to portray her in a biopic, reports the Detroit News. Franklin believes multiple Tony award-winning actress and singer Audra McDonald would be the perfect choice to play her in a film about the early years of her career.

During a recent trip to New York City, Franklin attended Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess on Broadway. It was supposedly the first time Franklin saw McDonald perform. Given McDonald’s extraordinary performance as Bess, it’s not surprising to hear the Queen of Soul wants her in the film project. Blackactors.net named McDonald’s portrayal of Bess as one of the top 10 performances of 2011.

McDonald, a classically trained singer, has won four Tonys and two Emmys, and is a veteran of the ABC show “Private Practice,” as well as Broadway shows “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Ragtime,” “Carousel” and “Master Class.” The actress was also recently nominated for a Drama League award for most distinguished performance.
