Billy Porter is set to return to Broadway later this fall as Drag Queen Lola in the stage adaptation of “Kinky Boots.”

Based on the 2005 British film of the same title, the musical has a score by Cyndi Lauper, with a book by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein (Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles, Newsies) and direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (2004’s La Cage aux Folles, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can).

“Kinky Boots” will center around a drag queen nightclub performer (originally played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film) who revitalizes a failing shoe factory when she inspires them to manufacture fetish footwear.

Before heading to Broadway, the production will debut at Broadway In Chicago‘s Bank of America Theatre.

No official casting has been confirmed for Chicago or Broadway, but the New York Times has reported the “Kinky” creative team was said to be “happy” with the work of Porter in the starring role.

Porter’s theater credits include Broadway’s “Smokey Joe’s Cafe,” “Miss Saigon,” and Off-Broadway’s “Angels in America.”
