There’s a new production on the Broadway block tackling the friendship and rivalry between basketball legends Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson and Larry Bird. “Magic/Bird,” which began previews March 21, officially opened on Broadway last week at the Longacre theater. The play is billed:

“At the heart of one of the fiercest rivalries in sports history, two of the greatest basketball players of all-time battled for three championships, bragging rights, and the future of their sport in the 1980s. Johnson and Bird electrified the nation on the court, reinvigorated the NBA, and turned their rivalry into one of the greatest and most famous friendships in professional sports.”

What’s most exciting about this production is it’s cast of promising black actors in both leading and supporting roles. Directed by Thomas Kail (In the Heights, Lombardi), the cast includes Kevin Daniels as basketball legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson, Tug Coker as Larry Bird, with  Francois Battiste, Rob Ray Manning, Jr. and Anthony Holiday playing multiple roles.

“Magic/Bird” is playing at the Longacre Theatre, 200 W. 48th St., NYC. For tickets or more information, visit magicbirdbroadway.com.
