Watch David Oyelowo in Lee Daniels’ ‘The Paperboy,’ director explains why he was cast
We finally get to see talented British actor David Oyelowo in newly released footage from Lee Daniels‘ controversial new film The Paperboy, an adaptation of Pete Dexter‘s novel.
The film follows two reporters enlisted to investigate the possible wrongful conviction of an alleged murderer in a small town in Florida during the 1960s. Oyelowo plays Yardley Acheman, one of the investigative reporters who becomes sexually involved with the woman who led him to the case.
During a press conference at Cannes Film Festival, the director explained why he cast black actors in roles intended for white actors. “It was partly because the issue of race relations had been festering in me,” said Daniels. “And it was partly because there aren’t enough roles for black actors in the world.”
The film stars Oyelowo, Macy Gray, Matthew McConaughey, Zac Effron, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman.
Oyelowo’s film credits include Planet of the Apes, The Help and most recently, George Lucas‘Red Tails. He can be seen next in the BET premiere of Ava DuVernay‘s Middle of Nowhere.
