UK Fantasy Series ‘Sinbad’ Trailer Debuts

SKY 1's 'Sinbad' SeriesThe trailer for the new SKY1/BBC period adventure series Sinbad has arrived on the web. The trailer offers up everything we would expect from an epic fantasy tale– mythical creatures, black magic, and goddesses.

Leading the cast of this updated take on the classic 8th century tale as Persian hero Sinbad is newcomer Elliot Knight who is joined by a host of well-known faces, including Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), Ashley Walters (Get Rich or Die Tryin’), and George Harris (Harry Potter). Newcomer Estella Daniels also co-stars.

“The 12-part series opens with Sinbad banished from his Middle Eastern homeland of Basra and cast out to sea on The Providence [ship] following the death of his much-loved brother. Now Sinbad must embark on an epic quest to rid himself of the curse placed on him by his own grandmother (Janet Suzman), and embrace his new destiny.”

With the character of Sinbad being of assumed Arab decent, it’s pretty exciting to see producers cast an unknown black talent in the prominent role (Knight has referred to himself as a “black guy” on his twitter account). “Sinbad is a great character for any actor to be able to play: impulsive, adventurous, passionate, loyal and brave; a true hero,” says Knight. “His story is packed with action, adventure and fantasy and I am looking forward to the exciting challenge of bringing him to life for a new generation.”

BBC Worldwide holds international rights to the series, so there’s a good chance Americans will be able to see it on BBC America. Canadians will get to see the series on SPACE. Sinbad will make its worldwide premiere in early July on UK’s Sky 1 HD.
