Alfre Woodard has joined the cast of British director Steve McQueen‘s 19th Century period drama Twelve Years a Slave.

The film, co-written by McQueen and John Ridley (Red Tails), tells the true story of a free black man living in New York City during the mid 1800s who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana.

Woodard will play “Mistress Shaw, a former slave who has risen in the Southern caste system,” reports The Hollywood Reporter. Although not the first black actor to be cast, Woodard is the first African-American attached to star in the project.

The Twelve Years cast also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Adepero Oduye, Ruth Negga, Lupita Nyong, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt.
