Audra McDonald, who already has four Tony Awards on her mantle, won a historic fifth on June 10 when she was named Best Actress in a Musical for her role in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.

McDonald is the first African-American actress to win five Tony Awards and has tied with Julie Harris and Angela Lansbury for most wins by an actress.

McDonald’s historic achievement comes to a head as this marks her first award for a leading role. Her past awards were for the plays A Raisin in the Sun and Master Class. She has also won for the musicals Ragtime and Carousel.
