The Wire alum Michael Kenneth Williams has joined the growing cast of British director Steve McQueen‘s period drama 12 Years a Slave.

The film, co-written by McQueen and John Ridley (Red Tails), tells the true story of a free black man living in New York City during the mid 1800s who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana.

The actor, who now stars as Chalky White on HBO’s Broadwalk Empire, will play Robert, a disobedient slave in the film. Known for his prominent facial scar, the actor fits the description of what producers are currently looking for in their slave roles.

Williams joins previously announced Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Adepero Oduye, Ruth Negga, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt.
