Sumayya Ali and David Hughey discuss the challenges of being a Broadway swing (Video)

Sumayya Ali and David Hughey guest star in the premiere episode of Standing By, a new web series about Broadway understudies and swings. The actors discuss their careers and the challenges of being ready to go on at any moment in the Tony award-winning production of The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess.

Ali is a swing and covers the roles of Bess, Clara, Serena, and The Strawberry Woman. She was last seen on Broadway in the revival production of Ragtime. New York credits include: City Center: Lost in the Stars. Regional: Master Class, Ragtime (Kennedy Center); Oklahoma! (Portland Center Stage). Film/TV: Red Hook Summer, American Idol. Hughey is making his Broadway debut in Porgy And Bess. He is a swing and covers the roles of Sportin’ Life (originated by David Alan Grier), Jake, and Robbins. He has toured in Porgy and Bess operas around the world. Regional credits include Lyric Opera of Chicago; Rappahannock County,Virginia Opera; IL Barbiere di Siviglia, L’ Elisir d’ Amore, Cleveland Opera; “Live From Lincoln Center.”
