Angela Bassett to Play Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife in Lifetime Movie

Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Lifetime’s upcoming drama, Betty and Coretta, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The telepic details the lives of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz following the assassination of theirs husbands, civil rights leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.

Bassett will play King with Mary J Blige taking on the role of X’s widow, Shabazz. In addition, legendary actress Ruby Dee will narrate the film on screen.

Bassett famously portrayed Shabazz 20 years ago in Spike Lee‘s Malcolm X. The actress earned an Image Award for her performance. Other credits include her Emmy-nominated role as Civil Rights Icon Rosa Parks in CBS’ “The Rosa Parks Story.”

Betty and Coretta begins production next month.
