Sheryl Lee Ralph has been tapped to play Jennifer Hudson‘s mother Cynthia on the new season of NBC’s Broadway series “Smash,” reports Vulture.

Ralph was nominated for a 1982 Tony Award for creating the role of Deena Jones in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls, and Hudson won an Oscar for her portrayal of Effie White in the film adaptation of the musical.

Hudson was recently cast to play Veronica Moore, described as “a Tony-winning Broadway star who reached her Broadway dream but paid a price for it.” No details have been released regarding the relationship and storyline between the mother/daughter diva duo.

Ralph’s television credits include “Moesha,” “Designing Women,” and “It’s a Living.”

Production on “Smash” is currently underway in New York City, however, no premiere date has been announced. Check out more pics from the set below.
