‘Black Orpheus’ Musical Being Developed for Broadway

Black Orpheus Movie PosterBroadway producer Stephen C. Byrd, who gave us the all-black Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire, is developing a new musical based on the Academy Award-winning 1959 film Black Orpheus (or Orfeu Negro).

The original film, which centers on the tragic story of two black Brazilians who fall in love, is set in a dangerous slum in Rio de Janeiro during the annual Carnaval. The infectious music alone is enough to make this a hit.

“I’ve seen the movie 25 times, at minimum, and always thought the story was highly theatrical and the music was transfixing,” Byrd said. “I’m hoping to cast at least the principal roles with well-known Brazilian singers and actors, because I think this show will succeed as long as it’s as authentically Brazilian as possible.”

Brazil has the second largest black population in the world, so the lead roles shouldn’t be that hard to cast. Toni Garrido played Orfeu in a 1999 film remake. You can watch the trailer for the original below.
