David Oyelowo Will Play Sugar Ray Robinson

David Oyelowo to play Sugar Ray RobinsonIn another fascinating example of black actors creating their own opportunities, David Oyelowo will reportedly executive produce and star in Sweet Thunder, a new biopic about legendary boxer Sugar Ray Robinson.

The film, which Wil Haygood has adapted from his biography Sweet Thunder: The Life And Times Of Sugar Ray Robinson, will focus on Robinson’s early career and possibly the organized crime circles that controlled the boxing industry in the 1940s and 1950s.

The film came about on the set of Lee DanielsThe Butler, reports Deadline. Oyelowo, along with Haygood and Butler screenwriter Danny Strong got together and set the wheels in motion.

Oyelowo can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed indie Middle of Nowhere. He can be seen next in Jack Reacher and Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln later this year.
