Gotham Awards: Emayatzy Corinealdi Wins Breakthrough Actor

Emayatzy Corinealdi attends 2012 Gotham Awards

The 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Awards were held last night (Nov. 26) at Cipriani Wall Street and the top acting honor went to a black actress.

Emayatzy Corinealdi won the Breakthrough Actor Award for her performance in Ava DuVernay’s Middle of Nowhere, a film about a married medical student who’s life is turned upside down when her husband is sent to prison.

She beat out the likes of Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Mike Birbiglia (Sleepwalk With Me), Thure Lindhardt (Keep the Lights On) and Melanie Lynskey (Hello, I Must Be Going) to take home the award.

Emily Blunt, co-star in this year’s Best Ensemble winner “Your Sister’s Sister,” along with Jack Black, presented the actress with the award. Corinealdi cited her many blessings in her acceptance speech.
