Marvin Gaye’s Family Doesn’t Want Lenny Kravitz To Play Him In Biopic

Lenny Kravitz to play Marvin Gaye

The family of Marvin Gaye is calling foul on Lenny Kravitz signing on to play the late Motown singer in a new film,  TMZ has learned.

As we previously reported, Kravitz is set to star in British filmmaker Julien Temple‘s unauthorized biopic about the last few years of the singer’s life.

Gaye’s son recently spoke with TMZ about his displeasure with the project. “The producers and directors of this film are very wrong and shameful ,” said Marvin Gaye III. “They’re trying to do a film about a low period in his life. They don’t even know the whole story.”

What’s more interesting about this latest development is the fact that Kravitz and Gaye’s son were childhood friends. “I would hope [Lenny] doesn’t have any idea that we are against this film being done.” Janis Gaye, the singer’s second and last wife, recently told the Londoner she felt “very skeptical” about the project.

Kravitz, who was born to a black mother (late actress Roxie Roker) and white father landed his first breakthrough acting role in 2009 as Nurse John in Lee Daniels’ Precious.  He was last seen in The Hunger Games and can be seen next in The Butler and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
