After expressing concern about being cut out of the upcoming Star Trek sequel, Noel Clarke can breathe a sigh of relief. His scene in the flick has not found its way on the cutting room floor. In fact, the actor is featured (for a split second) in the new teaser trailer.

Clarke plays a father who has a sick daughter. His character is new to the film and introduced as a key plot point for the villain. According to USA today, his presence also makes audiences relate to the future world. Here’s what director JJ Abrams had to say about his character:

“The family in peril plants the additional notion that this is a movie of real people dealing with real stuff even if it’s hundreds of years in the future,” says Abrams. “It’s stuff you can relate to today.”

Star Trek Into The Darkness opens in theaters May 17, 2013.
