Stage and screen star Ben Vereen to teach master class in Hoboken next week

Ben VereenHOBOKEN — Broadway star Ben Vereen will be holding a two-part master class for budding musical performers who are destined for the stage.

Rehearsals for students of at least 15 years old will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. at Garden Street School of the Performing Arts Dance Studio at 1018 Washington St., Second floor, followed by the Master Class with a small live audience Tuesday, Feb 19. at 4:30 p.m.

Vereen has appeared in numerous musicals including Sweet Charity, Hair, Pippin — for which he won a Tony Award — Chicago, and Wicked.

He has also appeared in numerous movies including, An Accidental Friendship, Mama, I Want to Sing! And documentary Broadway: The Next Generation and TV shows including episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Nanny, Grey’s Anatomy, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

At the Feb. 16 rehearsal students will learn songs, choreography and technique needed for Broadway auditions with Anne Brummel.

Then for the master class on Feb. 19, Ben Vereen will share stories about his 35-year-career, and what it’s like to work on Broadway shows as well as answer question posed by audience members.

He will then teach the students, who will perform the group musical theater piece and sing a solo piece they learned at the rehearsal.

The fee to participate in the rehearsal workshop and master class is $250.

Students of Garden Street School of the Performing Arts, High Tech High School, Hoboken High School, and students with a college ID will get a reduced rate of $195. The cost of taking part in the audience only is $50. Email to register.
