While the television spin-off didn’t work out as planned, Paramount Pictures has begun developing a new installment of the acclaimed Beverly Hills Cop movie franchise.

Eddie Murphy will reportedly reprise his role as Axel Foley in the new film, with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec working on the script.

According to Deadline, the move to develop a new sequel came after Hollywood bigwigs were impressed with Murphy’s performance (a supporting role to Brandon T. Jackson‘s character) in the failed pilot.

Shawn Ryan, the producer of the ill-fated pilot, tweeted: “Good news for fans of franchise is that the pilot tested so well, it has caused Paramount to put another #BHC movie into development.”

Murphy has suffered a number of box office flubs over the past few years after appearing in films such as Meet Dave,  Tower Heist, and most recently, A Thousand Words.
