‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ UK Teaser Trailer Released

Pathe UK has released the first official teaser trailer for the upcoming Nelson Mandela biopic, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and it’s pretty amazing.

In the trailer, Idris Elba appears as the iconic South African revolutionary leader and activist as he literally walks through a vast African plain.

While the trailer doesn’t show a close up of Elba as Mandela, it does provide some inspirational dialogue in an amazing voice-over performance by Elba in his best South African accent.

“I have walked a long walk to freedom,” narrates Elba as Mandela. “It has been a lonely road and it is not over yet. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin. People learn to hate. They can be taught to love. For love comes more naturally to the human heart.”

The film is based on the former South African President’s autobiography of the same name, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country’s once segregated society.

Elba, who can currently be seen in Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, has appeared in films such as Prometheus and Daddy’s Little Girls.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom will open in the U.S. November 29, ahead of it’s Jan. 3 premiere in the UK.
