‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’: What moviegoers are saying

'Lee Daniels' The Butler' Poster 2Lee Daniels’ The Butler hit theaters Friday and the film’s reception has been overwhelmingly positive so far.

Forest Whitaker stars as Cecil in the film, a character inspired by  the true story of Eugene Allen, an African-American who served as a butler in the White House under several presidents.

With an all-star cast that also includes household names like Oprah WinfreyMariah Carey, Terrence Howard, and Cuba Gooding Jr–it’s no surprise this film has taken the number one spot at the box office this weekend.

We scoured social media to see what actual moviegoers thought about the film and we were pretty amazed by the reactions.

David Begnaud said: “The Butler was inspiring, heartbreaking, funny, informative and packed! Full house. @Oprah was damn good.”

Rochelle Williams said: “Saw #TheButler. Moved by complicated, enduring love between butler & his wife–aging, working class black folk. Rare on the big screen.”

Tasha Hemmingway said: “#TheButler was phenomenal as was the entire cast! @ForestWhitaker gave another Oscar-worthy performance. Feeling appreciative tonight.”

Shondrella was extremely satisfied with the lead performances, writing: “Wooooooooow!!! The Butler!! Incredible!!! @ForestWhitaker and @Oprah will both be nominated for #Oscars Whole cast #brilliant!”

Drew Brees said “Saw the movie The Butler tonight before bed check at camp. So powerful and moving. Great actors. Incredible story. Everyone should see it.”

Ryan Walter Blair was a bit more critical in his analysis, writing: “The Butler has some strong performances and the writing is all solid, but it doesn’t quite reach deep enough. It’s a decent film.”

Daniel Mardirosian said: “The Butler- Excellent moive: Great cast & acting, amazing makeup jobs, & good story! Don’t miss this Oscar gem!”
