Chadwick Boseman is attached to star as James Brown in Get on Up, a biopic being produced Universal Pictures and Brian Grazier.

The film is being helmed by The Help‘s Tate Taylor. According to Variety, it “follows Brown’s rise from extreme poverty in Georgia to becoming a world famous and highly influential R&B musician with a string of hits in the 1960s and ’70s..,” but it will be filmed mostly in Mississippi.

Boseman, who made his breakout performance this year as baseball great Jackie Robinson in 42, came out as the top contender for the role after producers were said to audition several other high-profile black actors vying for the part.

Boseman, who has starred in films such as The Express and The Kill Hole, can be seen next alongside Kevin Costner in Summit’s NFL film Draft Day.

Get on Up is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Friday, October 17, 2014.
