Television staple ‘Murder, She Wrote’ is getting a reboot by NBC  with a black lead.

Octavia Spencer, who won an Oscar for her role in last year’s The Help, will star as an amateur detective, a role made famous by Golden Globe winner Angela Lansberry.

According to NBC, the reboot will star Spencer as a “hospital administrator and amateur sleuth who self-publishes her first mystery novel. Set in a day where sensational headlines inundate the news, this woman’s avid fascination with true crime leads her to become an active participant in the investigations.”

The original series starred Lansburry as a retired English teacher turned Mystery writer who always outsmarted local detectives in solving real-life murder mysteries. The series ran from 1984 to 1996 on CBS, and averaged 20+ million viewers each week.

The network has only committed to a pilot order at this point, but we’re hopeful this will lead to a series pickup.

Are you excited to see Spencer in her first leading television role? We want to hear your feedback below.
