Jill Scott to play James Brown’s wife in ‘Get on Up’

Rising star Jill Scott has landed a film role in the upcoming James Brown biopic Get on Up.

The film, directed by The Help‘s Tate Taylor, will follow the iconic singer’s rise to fame and chronicle his subsequent drug addiction and domestic violence issues.

Starring opposite Chadwick Boseman, Scott will play one of Brown’s wives, a role that was written specifically for her.

Scott also joins Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Nelsan Ellis in the movie, which starts filming today. The film is scheduled to open in theaters on Oct. 17, 2014.

Scott, who currently stars in David E. Talbert‘s Baggage Claim, has been making a name for herself in the film industry by starring in Tyler Perry‘s Why Did I Get Married? franchise, and appearing in critically acclaimed television projects such as Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias” and HBO’s “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detectives Agency.”
