Spirit Awards 2014: Michael B. Jordan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o, and Yolanda Ross nominated

Spirit AwardsAwards season kicked off this morning when the 2014 Independent Spirit Award nominees were announced.

Steve McQueen‘s 12 Years a Slave earned a record number of nominations, which includes Chiwetel Ejiofor scoring a best male lead nom for his powerful role as a free man kidnapped and sold into slavery, and Lupita Nyong’o for a best female supporting nom for her role as Patsy.

Michael B. Jordan, who shot to stardom earlier this year for portraying Bay area shooting victim Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station, also scored a best male lead nomination.

Other nominees include Yolanda Ross for her role as a recovering drug addict in Go for Sisters.

Spirit Awards nominees were announced on Tuesday morning by actors Octavia Spencer and Paula Patton at the W Hotel in Hollywood.
