Courtney B. Vance took home his first ever Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his role as attorney Johnnie Cochran in The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.

Vance, who won a Tony award this year for his role in Broadway’s Lucky Guy, gave enthusiactially thanked colleagues and his family, including wife Angela Bassett, while accepting the award on Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Vance beat out fellow nominees Cuba Gooding Jr. (The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock: The Abominable Bride), Idris Elba (Luther), Bryan Cranston (All the Way), and Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager).
