‘Moonlight’ Trailer: Trevante Rhodes, André Holland Star in Coming-of-Age Drama

The trailer for the critically acclaimed drama Moonlight offers a look at African-American life from a perspective that has rarely been explored in great detail.

Based on the play “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue” by Tarell Alvin McCraney, the film follows Trevante Rhodes (“If Loving You Is Wrong”) as Chiron, a young black man coming to terms with his sexuality as he struggles with family issues while growing up in Miami’s rough Liberty City neighborhood.

The trailer begins with Rhodes and Andre Holland (“The Knick”) portraying Chiron and Kevin—childhood friends who form a romantic bond after reconnecting as adults. The pair are shown at three different stages in life, portrayed by three sets of different actors in a very unforgettable coming-of-age drama.

The ensemble cast includes Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, Janelle Monáe, Alex R. Hibbert, Jaden Piner, Ashton Sanders, and Jharrel Jerome.

Moonlight opens in theaters on Oct. 21.
